Can I drive my own car to Mazatlán, and for how long?
Yes, with a permit. A foreign-plated car needs a Temporary Import Permit — a TIP — which you get at the border from Banjercito. You leave a refundable deposit of roughly US$200–400. And you need Mexican car insurance: your policy from home does not cover you here.
The detail
Mazatlán is far enough south that you need the permit. The free zone near the border does not reach here, and neither does the Sonora-only arrangement.
The permit
You get the TIP at the border crossing, from Banjercito. Bring the vehicle title or registration in your name, your passport, your immigration document and a credit card in the same name as the title. The deposit is refundable — when you cancel the permit on the way out.
That last part is where money gets lost. Drive home without cancelling the TIP and you forfeit the deposit, and the vehicle stays flagged in the system. Cancel it at the border, in person, and keep the receipt.
The insurance
Your policy from home does not work here. Mexican law requires liability cover from a Mexican insurer, and if you have an accident without it the consequences go well beyond money.
Buy it before you cross, from a company you can find again. The cheapest online policy is not a bargain if nobody answers the phone after a collision.
The part that changes with residency
The TIP is tied to your immigration status. If you switch to temporary residency while your car is here, the rules change and the timing matters. Ask about it before you start the residency process, not after — getting this wrong can mean losing the vehicle.
What to do now
- Check that the title is in your name and that you are carrying the original or a certified copy.
- Get the TIP at Banjercito at the crossing. Do not accept anyone offering to do it for you in the parking lot.
- Buy Mexican liability insurance before crossing. Keep proof in the car.
- Put the TIP expiry date in your calendar the day you get it.
- Cancel the TIP at the border on your way out and keep the receipt, even if you plan to return.
