How do I find someone in Mazatlán who works in English?
It is harder than the brochures suggest, and residents say so consistently. Mazatlán is a tourist city, but outside the hotel strip far fewer merchants and professionals work in English than newcomers expect. The reliable route is a verified referral, not a search.
The detail
This is the single most common frustration reported by people who move here, ahead of heat, traffic and paperwork.
We measured one slice of it. Of the 423 dental practices registered in Mazatlán, we found fewer than five with any English on their website. That is not a claim about who speaks English in person — plenty do — but it tells you how little of this city is set up to be found by someone searching in English.
Why searching does not work well here
Most small businesses in Mazatlán have no website at all. Many use a Facebook page instead. So the ones you find first in English are usually the ones paying to be found, which is a different thing from the ones that are good.
What actually works
- Ask in the community groups, and ask for a name plus a reason. "Who do you use, and why?" gets far better answers than "recommendations please".
- Ask the person you already trust. Your landlord's plumber is a better bet than a search result.
- Go in person and ask directly. Many places have one person who works in English and does not advertise it.
- Learn the ten phrases that cover most transactions. It changes how you are treated more than any app.
What we are building
We are working through the city's businesses and verifying three things: that they exist, that their license checks out where one is required, and whether they genuinely work in English.
That list is the reason this site exists. It is being built slowly on purpose.
What to do now
- Before you need something urgently, ask the community which name comes up repeatedly.
- Confirm the business exists at the address given, not just on a page.
- For anything licensed — medical, legal, notarial — verify the license. Mexico's federal registry is public and free.
- Save the contact once it works. In this city a good referral is worth more than a good review.
Who handles this
The verified directory is in progress, one category at a time. We publish a business only after checking it ourselves.
We would rather be slow than wrong. A list padded with unverified names is what every other site already offers.
